Little did I know, I wasn’t just managing. I was over-managing.

Early in my career, I believed that excellent management meant having all the answers. I prided myself on knowing the metrics, running efficient meetings, and keeping the wheels turning.

But then, something unexpected happened.

When Execution Turns Into Exhaustion

One of my top team members left.

It wasn’t because of poor performance or a better offer elsewhere. It was burnout.

They said, “I always felt like I was executing your plan, not contributing to the bigger one.”

That hit hard.

The Mirror Moment

It forced me to reflect not just on how I managed, but on how I showed up as a leader.

I realized I had created an environment of control rather than collaboration. My intentions were good, but the outcome left people feeling unseen and undervalued.

That was my turning point.

The Shift That Changed Everything

Since then, I’ve redefined what leadership means to me. I moved from being the one who:

  • Pushes execution to someone who unlocks ownership
  • Focuses on deliverables to someone who coaches through ambiguity
  • Manages performance to someone who builds trust and autonomy

That’s when I stopped being just a manager. I started becoming a leader.

Here’s what I’ve learned. You can’t be in every room if you’re scaling a team.

And if your team needs you in every room, you’re not leading. You’re bottlenecking.

Real leadership isn’t about control. It’s about designing systems, norms, and cultures that can scale without you.

Because the best leaders don’t just get things done. They make others better at doing them.

That’s leadership.
